Coaching Moves
A newsletter discussing some of the head coach openings and hirings in the off-season
Coaching moves will be a newsletter about job openings in Texas. This is not a complete look at all the openings available, but more of a highlight and maybe some occasional commentary.
For a more complete look at the jobs available, please join THSCA and enjoy the benefits of membership in this great coaches association.
Also follow Matt Stepp for frequent announcements regarding head coach movement in the state of Texas High School Football.
This week has been bananas! Lots of retirements and coaches moving on. Wednesday alone had a couple major announcements when Coach Westerberg, a four time state champion with Allen HS, retired from Salado HS. The New Braunfels head coach also announced his retirement after leading the Unicorns for 10 seasons.
OH, and let’s not forget the legend Nick Saban retiring! I can’t even begin to do justice to his career in a newsletter, but this was one that I didn’t believe when another coach first mentioned it to me. I had to check my phone and turn on SportsCenter before I accepted it to be true.
It will definitely be interesting to see who is considered and ultimately hired to lead Bama in the post-Saban era.
Head coach movement is very interesting to me. Especially when successful schools come open.
One such job that opened in December is the Head Football/Campus Coordinator position at George Ranch High School in Lamar Consolidated ISD. George Ranch is a 6A school in Fort Bend county, southwest of Houston. There is lots of growth happening in this district as the Houston suburban sprawl continues all around the area. The school has been successful, having won a 5A football state championship in 2015, and are always one of the most competitive athletic programs in the area.
George Ranch is open because the previous head coach, Nick Cavallo moved on to take the head coach/campus coordinator position at Katy Morton Ranch. This has been open since before the holiday break, so I imagine it is nearing closing, if they don’t already have some interviews and finalists in mind.
Another similarly interesting opening is the Head Football Athletic Coordinator position at McKinney High School. McKinney HS is the oldest school in McKinney, TX, another fast growing area in Texas. The district built a new football and community center in 2018 that is one of the best stadiums in the state.
This week has also seen a slew of smaller classification coaches resign or retire:
Timpson HS - 2023 2A state champion, head coach retires
Nederland HS - 5A D2, head coach retires
East Bernard HS - 3A D2, head coach moving on
Rice HS - 3A D2, head coach resigns
There are also several assistant positions open right now, which is unusual for this time of year, including coordinator positions. Considering there is a teaching and coaching shortage, though, it is not surprising.
This newsletter is about opportunity. If you are looking for a new coaching position, join THSCA, follow Matt Stepp on Twitter/X. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football also has a running list of head coach openings.
